There are so many mattresses out there so how do you choose the one for you? It can be so confusing to navigate all the options! We understand that you really do want to get this right. After all you and your mattress are going to be spending lots and lots of time together.

Of course buying a mattress starts with doing your homework. You want to be informed. There are many things to think about. Soft/firm/medium? You’ll want to consider comfort, durability and value for money, amongst other things.

Here are the top 10 things to consider before you make a purchase:

Make sure the build quality is excellent

There’s been lots of innovation over the years. Much of it has been good but sometimes the innovation has come from the pursuit of affordability but at the expense of quality. A well made mattress should be long lasting, comfortable and supportive over a long time period.

Be sure it’s comfortable

Everyone is different and you need to find what works best for you. Our bodies are unique and we have unique preferences too. If you get this right you’ll be sleeping better; and then you’ll be more effective at work; not only that but you’ll have more vitality to bring to your relationships. Who knew that all of this would start with a comfortable mattress?

Value for money

Most people don’t want to spend $10,000 on a mattress but they want something cheap and nasty either… It needs to be the very best mattress for your budget. Look for the excellent value, not the lowest price – remember that a mattress is an investment in your health and well-being.

Watch out for gimmicks

Mattress sellers will label mattresses as “orthopedic” or “medically-approved,” but there is no medical or scientific group that officially certifies mattresses with these labels. A mattress may have orthopedic-friendly features, but no official medical group has verified this. Don’t fall for the sexy sales terms (eg super soft)… Focus on finding a mattress that feels right for you.

Buy from a specialist

Lots of different retailers sell mattresses but many of them sell a thousand other things as well. With a specialist mattress manufacturer & retailer the staff have had proper training and they’ll have lots of experience and knowledge too. A true specialist has all the information that you need and they’ll give you dedicated assistance; they’ll also understand that you need plenty of time to be confident with your choice.

Choose the firmest mattress that’s still comfortable

It should support your spine but maintain its natural curve. Find the perfect balance of support and comfort.

Safety first

What about potentially toxic fire retardant chemicals, allergenic dyes and chemical fabric treatments? Is the mattress hygienic? It’s worth investing a little time to be really sure of what you’re buying. Talk to the manufacturer if you can. Buy Australian made where possible.

Take it for a spin

And don’t rush! When you think you’ve have found the right mattress be sure to test it for at least 15 minutes before you decide on it. Lay in your most typical sleep position to really get a feel for it. Ideally bring your partner too. We know that this can be too easily overlooked especially when someone has invested lots of time investigating all the options only to then go and rush the purchase at the end.

Treat yourself

When you consider that you’ll spend around a third of your life on your mattress then you’ll appreciate that this is not an incidental purchase; and price should not be the primary consideration. Our advice is that you purchase the very best that you can comfortably afford.

Get the other things right too

This last point is not about the mattress but we thought it’s worth sneaking it into the top 10 anyway; having invested in a new mattress be sure that there are many other factors that determine how well you’ll sleep. What about making your bedroom into a ‘sleep sanctuary’ – a genuine place of rest and nothing else? Leave your work/laptop for another room, avoid electronics, invest in gentle lighting, beautify the space & avoid clutter. When you enter your bedroom to sleep let everything in and about the room scream ‘sleep sanctuary’.

So there’s our top 10

We hope you’ve gotten something out of it. We’d love to help you to explore all the options and help you to find the perfect mattress for you.
